Be involved in one of the fastest growing sports in the country! The sport is growing at a breath taking pace. Based on USA Triathlon membership was between 15,000-
21,000 during the years of 1993-2000, the explosion in the popularity of the sport have shot annual memberships increasing 5.5 percent from year-end 2012 to year-end 2013, growing from 165,698 to 174,787 and ranks as the third-highest growth percentage in the past five years. In a report by USAT “The most recent SGMA study- released in May 2010- tells us that 1,208,000 Americans participated in at least one on-road (traditional) triathlon in 2009. This total represents 11.1 percent growth from 2008 (1,087,000) and 51.4 percent growth from 2007
(789,000)” These numbers are only USAT and do not include YMCA, Universities and other organizations putting on triathlons. After hitting 441,060 members in 2009, USA Triathlon consistently experienced 4 percent growth in 2010 and 2011 before a 5.64 percent increase in annual and one-day members in 2012, topping out at a record high 510,859.

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact causes of the continued growth of the sport, but the below factors all played a part:

• Society’s interest in fitness and living a healthy lifestyle
• The growth of the number of total races across the country, making races easier to get to
• The growth in the number of the more accessible shorter sprint races, which made the sport more accessible to those with fewer hours to train each week
• Media attention on the sport
• Growth in the 30-49 age groups who are looking for varied outlets for fitness
• Peer pressure from friends who have tried the sport
• The ego reward of saying you “are a triathlete”
• Increase in clubs, which create a community concept for men and especially women who enjoy the group training and support atmosphere
• Increase in resources (websites, books, magazines) that provide assistance/education in getting started
• Growth in multisport shops and triathlon specific training and racing gear
• Marketing and communications efforts of USA Triathlon
• Growth in the number of USA Triathlon certified coaches who are able to provide training plans and individual attention for athletes who need guidance and motivation

Position your organization with the healthy lifestyle and lifelong fitness associated with triathlon. The sport of triathlon, like no other sport, embraces the concepts of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. You can often see participants at triathlons that range in age from 12 to 85 years of age. Every year there are increasing numbers of kid’s triathlons. This brings more athletes into the sport for a longer period of their life. The increasing number of kid’s triathlons adds more ages to include 4-11 year olds.

Position your organization with an attractive demography. Triathlete average individual income is $126,000 per year. The largest age group at 35-44 years old white collar professionals. Average age is 38, with men being the biggest participants – 59.6% male.
